'During the period September,November, 1917, when the Division was in the front line, the work of the unit was particularly difficult and arduous. He was untiring in his efforts to overcome difficulties doing the work of several and encouraging by his example the severely taxed men under him. His devotion to duty has been marked throughout. He enlisted 9th October, 1914.'
