War service: Egypt, Western Front

Disembarked from HMAT ‘Star of Victoria’, Egypt, 5 May 1916. Transferred to 47th Bn, Tel-el-Kebir, 24 May 1916.

Embarked Alexandria on HMT ‘Huntspill’ and proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force, 7 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 14 June 1916; taken on strength of 47th Bn, 18 August 1916; proceeded on leave to the United Kingdom, 15 September 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 29 September 1917.

Taken prisoner of war, 27 March 1918; repatriated to England, 5 December 1918.

Admitted to 4th Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, 30 November 1918. Embarked on board HS ‘Jan Breydel’ and proceeded to England for further treatment, 5 December 1918 (ulcers on leg); admitted to Fulham Military Hospital, 5 December 1918; marched into No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 22 January 1919.

Found guilty in London, 22 January 1919, of being absent without leave, 10.00 am, 14 January, to 9.00 am, 21 January 1919: admonished by superior officer; forfeited total of 7 days’ pay; marched into No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 12 February 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on HT ‘Medic’, 10 April 1919.

Found guilty in at Sea, 5 May 1919, of leaving his picquet whilst in Cape Town: fined a total of 20 days’ pay; disembarked Brisbane, 31 May 1919. Discharged Brisbane, 18 July 1919.
