War service: proceeded to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (Gallipoli), 12 April 1915. Appointed Lance Corporal, 13 May 1915; Corporal, 19 July 1915; Lance Sergeant, 14 August 1915. Treated for dysentery, 29 August 1915; transferred to St David's Hospital, Malta, 6 September 1915; rejoined unit at Tel el Kebir, Egypt, 4 December 1915. Admitted to 1st Australian Dermatological Hospital, 20 January 1916; discharged, 28 March 1916. Total treatment for venereal disease: 69 days. Transferred to 48th Bn, 26 April 1916.
