'Showed great courage and devotion to duty when acting as Telephonist and Linesman and assistant to an F.O.O. during the operations East of WESTHOEK on 20th September, 1917. He repaired lines while under heavy sniping and machine gun fire. He was constantly under direct observation of the enemy and his work was of the greatest assistance. The information received over these lines was most valuable and this amn rendered excellent service.'
