'At BROODSEINDE on 9th October, 1917, when communications were all cut under terrific barrage this man without orders proceeded to repair lines effecting communications at a vital stage of the attack. He was constantly employed for 30 hours. During this time he lost his mate and on two occasions was buried. Although suffering from shell shock he carried on until the Battalion was relieved.'
