'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack on enemy Strong point and trench at GUEUDECOURT on the morning of 21st February, 1917. He was in an exposed position above the parapet well to the flank of the leading party bombing along the trench. From there he indicated the enemy to our bombers and was instrumental in directing fire upon a number of the enemy who were attempting to take our bombers in flank. He displayed the utmost coolness throughout.'
