Military Medal 'For conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty. On 2nd September 1918 at PERONNE he carried important messages from the front line to Battalion Headquarters under very heavy shell and machine gun fire and maintained communication when all other means had failed. On every occasion he had to pass through a gassed area which was under close machine gun fire. Though twice blown up by shells and gassed he carried on and his utter disregard of personal safety and determination set an inspiring example to all.'
