'For good work done at POZIERES from 5th to 8th August, 1916, and also from 28th to 31st August, 1916. During most of this period he was in charge of the Lewis guns and displayed exceptional ability in handling his guns and crews under heavy shelling. Frequently he was out in No Man's Land all night with his guns whenever an attack was imminent.'
