'On night 6th/7th October, 1916, during a raid on enemy trenches near FRELINGHEM, for great devotion to duty and absolute disregard of danger. Though his Battery was shelled immediately it opened fire and he and his detachment were knocked down by the concussion of a shell and continually bespattered with mud he stood up and loaded his gun and kept firing until its task was completed, having fired 43 rounds.'
