Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 29 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 4 April 1916. Taken on strength, 1st Bn, 3 June 1916.

Wounded in action, 22-23 July 1916 (shell shock); admitted to No 2 Field Ambulance, 23 July 1916, and transferred same day to 44th Casualty Clearing Station; to Ambulance Train No 27, 24 July 1916, and admitted to 23rd General Hospital, Etaples, 24 July 1916; to No 6 Convalescent Depot, 31 July 1916; to No 5 Convalescent Depot, 13 August 1916; rejoined unit, 20 September 1916.

Admitted to 5th Australian Field Ambulance, 30 December 1916 (influenza); rejoined unit, 13 January 1917.

On leave to United Kingdom, 29 July 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 2 August 1917 (day unclear on Form B103).

Wounded in action, 7 October 1917 (gun shot wound, left leg); admitted to 5th Australian Field Ambulance, 8 October 1917; transferred to 22nd General Hospital, Darmas, 9 October 1917; to England, 15 October 1917, and admitted to Queen's Military Hospital, Whatly, Lancashire, 16 October 1917; to 2nd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 16 November 1917; discharged on furlough, 27 December 1917, to report to No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 10 January 1918. Marched outb to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 25 March 1918.
