Enlisted, 25 October 1915; discharged, 8 April 1916 (medically unfit). War service: Western Front Embarked Melbourne, 19 February 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 25 April 1917. Marched in to Australian Machine Gun Training Depot, Grantham, 6 May 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 26 June 1917; taken on strength, 9th Machine Gun Company, 23 August 1917. Wounded in action, 12 October 1917 (shrapnel wound, right leg and lungs); admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance, 13 October 1917, and thence to Casualty Clearing Station; to 7th Canadian General Hospital, 14 October 1917; to England, 28 October 1917, and admitted to Horton County of London War Hospital, Epsom. Transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 24 December 1917; discharged on furlough, 2 January 1918, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 16 January 1918. Found guiltry, 7 January 1918, of in London (1) drunkenness (2) violently resisting arrest: awarded forfeiture of 3 days' pay. Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Osterley', 31 January 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 13 April 1918, for overland travel to Adelaide; discharged Adelaide (medically unfit), 7 June 1918.
