Military Medal 'For gallantry and conspicuous conduct during the enemy attack in the vicinity of LAVIEVILLE South West of Albert 5th April 1918. During the engagement this N.C.O. patrolled and repaired telephone lines continuously under an extremely heavy barrage thereby retaining communication between Group and Batteries at a time when artillery support was most essential. The above work was carried out without regard to personal safety.'

McCleery laid and maintained lines during a most critical period. On two occasions he had the linesman with him wounded, but he carried on and completed his task without assistance before returning to the Brigade forward station. His untiring energy and bravery under enemy shell and machine gun fire inspired the men under him, and it was largely due to his splendid efforts and example that telephonic communication was maintained, between the 12th A.I. Brigade Headquarters and its Battalions.'
