Appointed Lance Corporal (3 months' probation), 3 February 1916; promoted Corporal (3 months' probation), 15 February 1916.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 22 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 28 March 1916.

Promoted Sergeant, at sea, 24 March 1916.

Wounded in action, 21 July 1916 (gun shot wound, left arm, foot), and admitted to Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to Ambulance Train No 24, 23 July 1916, and admitted No 9 General Hospital, Rouen, 24 July 1916 (right leg amputated below knee: wound severe); transferred to England, 26 July 1916, and admitted to Beaufort War Hospital, Bristol, 27 July 1916; transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 14 October 1916. Discharged on furlough, 24 October 1916, to report to 1st AAH, Harefield, 2 November 1916.

Transferred to No 2 Auxiliary Hospital, 10 January 1917.

Commenced return to Australia from Avonmouth on board HS 'Karoola', 22 February 1917; discharged (medically unfit), Sydney, 11 May 1917.
