Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He showed the greatest courage and fearlessness in attending wounded whilst exposed to heavy shell fire and gas fumes, and assisting to carry them to the collecting post. The stretcher bearers had suffered severe casualties and it was owing to his magnificent example that they maintained their courage and endurance.'
