'In an operation near MERRIS on June 28th 1918, Private MITCHELL as company runner carried messages to advancing platoons through heavy enemy machine gun and artillery fire. On 3 occasions he was successful in reaching the foremost positions, carrying three boxes of bombs and delivering his messages. Again on 30th June at the same place he carried bombs through an enemy barrage to a platoon post which the enemy were attempting to raid. He displayed courage and determination throughout the operation.'
