'Was one of a Lewis gun section in the attack on the German line South of BULLECOURT on 11th April, 1917. He showed conspicuous bravery during the German counter-attack by taking up a commanding position with his gun and shooting down any Germans that showed above the trench and at the same time encouraging his comrades to remain steady, and resist to the last. During the consolidation of the new position BERTRAM kept continually on the alert, using his gun with excellent effect.'
