Military Medal

'Near VILLERET during our attack on the Brown Line on 18th September, 1918, this N.C.O. displayed most conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When his platoon was held up by cross fire from two machine guns at very close range, Corporal NELLEY, taking advantage of shell holes and smoke but under very hot fire all the time, brought his Lewis Gun into action within 15 yards of an enemy gun. A short fire fight ensued in which this N.C.O. by fearlessly exposing himself obtained superiority, enabling his section to move round behind him and capture the two guns and part of their crews.'
