Military Medal 'At about 11.55 a.m. on 31st May, 1917, in the PLOEGSTEERT Sector during a T[rench] M[ortar] shoot, a man was seen to rise from the vicinity of where our bombs were falling and stagger towards our trenches. He was twice sniped at by the enemy, but managed to reach a point about 90 yards from our trenches where he took cover behind a bush. About 10 minutes later he again attempted to reach our lines, but collapsed after going only 10 yards, and he was then seen to be an Australian. Gunner NELSON immediately volunteered to go to his assistance, and accompanied by Private RISBY, 38th Battalion, crawled across "No Man's Land" to him, dressed his wounds, and as he was too badly wounded to walk, NELSON and RISBY, in full view of the enemy, carried him safely to our lines.'
