Military Medal

'On 20th September 1917 near WESTHOEK as No. 1 of a Machine Gun he went forward to the attack and was successful in inflicting heavy casualties on the enemy. Later, when his gun was blown to pieces, and his team reduced by half, he brought up another gun and fresh men and with extreme coolness took up a position under heavy fire, from which he was able to harass the enemy, who were preparing for a counter attack. During the whole period in the line, his example of courage and cheerfulness, although in the most exposed positions, affected his comrades in a marked degree.'
