Taken on strength at Gallipoli, 29 August 1915. Evacuated from Gallipoli with acute appendicitis, 30 November 1915, and admitted to hospital, Egypt.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 19 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 26 March 1916.

Wounded in action, 26 August 1916; evacuated to Belfast, Ireland, 3 September 1916; transferred to England, and discharged from Harefield Hospital, 1 December 1916.

Proceeded overseas to France, 28 March 1917; rejoined unit, 1 April 1917. Promoted Sergeant, 20 July 1917; 2nd Lieutenant, 3 November 1917.
