'For bravery and devotion to duty during the advance near CHUIGNES on 24th August, 1918. Private BIRKIN was conspicuous by his coolness in firing his guns under intense hostile Machine Gun fire. At a time when the keeping of his gun in action was all important he carried on with marked courage and was largely instrumental in enabling the Infantry to proceed.'
