Military Medal 'For great courage and devotion to duty. In the neighbourhood of PERONNE, during operations August 29th,20th, 31st., September 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th., this Sapper has particularly distinguished himself in his work on the footbridges, and has rendered the utmost help to his Officer and N.C.O's by his dogged tenacity. Particularly on the night 2nd/3rd September when he patrolled, in a collapsible boat, the marshes and swamp of the SOMME, 300 to 400 yards in advance of our Outposts, and within 50 to 100 yards of the enemy, endeavouring to locate a way through the swamp for foot-tracks. Throughout these operations he inspired his comrades by his untiring energy, and behaved with the utmost coolness and bravery, without regard to personal risks.'
