Admitted to 8th Field Ambulance, South Rail Head, 12 May 1916 (diarrhoea and vomiting); transferred to 14th Field Ambulance, 13 May 1916 (pyrexia, unknown origin); to 8th Field Ambulance, 15 May 1916 (rheumatism); discharged to and rejoined unit, Ferry Post, 19 May 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Posted missing, 19 July 1916. Fate subsequently determined as 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916'. Handwritten note on Form B103: 'Presume Buried In No Man's Land approx 5J90 43 to 5K02.5.1 Sheet Hazebrouck 5A'. Statement, Red Cross File No 24100207, 3943 Pte W. STEELE, C Company, 59th Bn, 4 September 1916: '"Paddy the cook" otherwise Pte. E. Shaw 2444 C. (cook) 59th. Batt told me he saw Samuel's dead body during the night of July 19th. at Fleurbaix. Shaw was out all night and saw the body while going over in the charge or coming back afterwards. He told me this when he came back to the battalion, after being in hospital for a few days.' |
