'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of two mortars in advanced positions, which were constantly under heavy shell fire. When the enemy troops appeared to be making for an attack, and had put down a heavy barrage lasting three an a half hours, he personally conducted shooting by his section, and annihilated several small parties of the enemy.'
