Military Medal 'For courageous leadership at LIHONS on 11th August 1918. When all his senior N.C.O.s had become casualties Lance Corporal SMITH showed splended coolness and skill in reorganising and taking charge of the platoon. In the attack he led his men with fearless dash and clever judgment. His coolness disregard of personal danger and power of endurance were an example to all, inspiring those around him to further efforts.'
