Meritorious Service Medal 'This Non-Commissioned Officer served in the capacity of Company Quarter-Master Sergeant and Regimental Quarter-Master Sergeant during the period of 17th September 1918 and 31st December 1918, and his work has always been of the most serviceable nature. it is in a great measure due to the earnestness and interest this Non-Commissioned Officer took in his work whilst Company Quarter-Master Sergeant that the sick evacuations of his Company, both in and out of the Line, were at so low a figure. In the fighting in which the Battalion has been during the period Quartermaster Sergeant SMITH has been found at all times thoroughly reliable, and his work has always been well done. Unsparing of self and regardless of personal safety he makes it his business to see that everything is going well, and no trouble is too great or work too hard so long as he is able to satisfy himself that the men are being well fed and cared for. He is strongly recommended for distinction.'
