The Bronze Medal for Military Valour (Italy) Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 174 Date: Military Medal 'On 26th July 1917, at 2. p.m. this Battery position was shelled by 5.9" Howitzer Battery causing the camouflage which was covering the ammunition to be set alight. Sergeant SUTHERLAND without hesitation rushed to the dump, pulled the camouflage away and with buckets of water from a neighbouring hole succeeded in putting out the fire, thereby saving much ammunition. By this time some of the charges had ignited and were exploding. During the whole time the enemy maintained a steady rate of fire on the Battery so that Sergeant SUTHERLAND's act was performed at much personal risk.'
