Medals |
Military Medal 'On the night of 18th/19th May, 1917, during a heavy bombardment and a hostile raid on LE TOUQUEST Sector, this man showed great gallantry and devotion to duty. He and Lance Corporal J> HAM alone remained of Lewis gun crew, and together they worked the gun though under heavy shell fire. While being bombed by the five enemy who had entered the trench he assisted Lance Corporal HAM in firing on them, and killing three in the trench and the other two on the parapet as they retreated. He with Lance Corporal HAM were thus responsible for killing the whole of the five enemy who were the only ones to enter our trenches. He also assisted in directing fire on the raiders in No Man's Land causing heavy casualties. His courage in assisting Lance Corporal HAM in working the gun so effectively has aroused the admiration of his Officers and his comrades.'
