Taken on strength of 55th Bn, Tel el Kebir, Egypt, 16 February 1916; appointed Driver, 17 June 1916.

Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 27 June 1916.

Found guilty, 17 November 1916, of being absent without leave from 7:00 am, 10 November to 7:00 am, 11 November 1916: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2 and forfeited 9 days' pay.

On leave to United Kingdom, 20 January 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 13 February 1917.

Admitted to 15th Australian Field Ambulance and transferred to Casualty Clearing Station, 17 February 1917 (venereal disease); to 1st General Hospital, Etretat, 19 February 1917; to 51st General Hospital, Etaples, 23 February 1917 (venereal disease: total period of treatment, 26 days'); discharged from hospital and marched in to 5th Australian Division Base Depot, 14 March 1917.

Marched out to unit, 21 March 1917; rejoined unit in the field, 23 March 1917.

Admitted to 14th Field Ambulance and transferred to 58th General Hospital, Etaples, 16 September 1917 (haemorrhoids); transferred to No 7 Convalescent Depot, Boulogne, 4 October 1917; to No 10 Convalescent Depot, Reault, 9 October 1917; discharged to Base Depot, 18 October 1917.
