War service: Egypt, Western Front Disembarked Suez, ex 'Wandilla', 7 December 1915. Found guilty, Serapeum, 7 January 1916, of being absent without leave from parade: awarded 48 hours' Field Punishment No 2. Found guilty, Tel el Kibir, 1 March 1916, of being absent without leave from 0230 hours, 25 February 1916 until 2150 hours, 29 February 1916: awarded 96 hours' Field Punishment No 2 and forfeited 4 days' pay. Admitted to No 15 Field Ambulance, Tel el Kebir, 3 March 1916 (nasal obstruction); transferred to No 2 Australian Stationary Hospital, Tel el Kebir, 5 March 1916 (deflected septum); to No 3 Australian General Hospital, Abbassia, 7 March 1916; discharged to Combined Training and Base Depot, Zeitoun, 3 April 1916, and posted to 'A' Details. Joined 8th Training Bn, Tel el Kebir, 17 April 1916. Marched out to 8th Training Bn, Tel el Kebir, 25 May 1916, and rejoined 31st Bn, Ferry Post. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 16 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 23 June 1916. Found guilty, 13 July 1916, of drunkenness on July 1916: awarded 48 hours' Field Punishment No 2. Killed in action, 20 July 1916. On 6 November 1916 the ANZAC Section, 3rd Echelon, General Headquarters, British Expeditionary Force advised the Officer in Charge of Records at Administrative Headquarters by letter (reference 18704) that while Pte Weakley was previously reported as killed in action, he should now be '? officially reported as under:- 318 Pte. Weakley P. Died whilst Prisoner of War, 19.7.16[.] May the Army Forms 209A and B103 together with Army Form 209A for Staff Paymaster forwarded to you under cover of this office correspondence?be cancelled'. On 11 November 1916, however, as telegram was sent from Australian Records Rouen to Administrative Headquarters, London in relation to this letter and requested 'correspondence number 18704 dated November 6th. requesting you to cancel Army Form 209A and 103 from 318 Weakley P. 31st Battalion have been cancelled?.Army Forms submitted by this office are correct.' Deputy Assistant Adjutant General Graves Registrations Enquiries reported, 1 April 1917: 'Burial report from SSV 30 2/7 FO List 185a'. A translated German message of 29 October 1919 states, 'Iden. Disc handed over by Intell. Officer of 6th Army Head Qrs. Through Central Office for Deceased Estates, 2/10/16[.] Australian Soldier P. Weakley, 31st Bn., Iden. Disc 318, fell in the neighbourhood of Fromelles on 19/7/16.' Note on Red Cross File No 2880709: 'Prisoner of War Died (sic) 19.7.16. German Death List 13.9.16.
