Enlisted at Cootamundra, New South Wales. Embarked at Sydney, 14 April 1916; disembarked Egypt.

Embarked from Alexandria, 29 July 1916; disembarked Southampton, via Marseilles, 9 August 1916. Embarked overseas for France, 16 September 1916. Admitted to 26th General Hospital, Etaples, 5 October 1916 (measles); taken on strength, 56th Bn, 7 November 1916.

Appointed Lance Corporal, 3 January 1917. Detached to Musketry School, 2 June 1917; rejoined unit, 17 June 1917. Reverted to ranks at own request, 2 August 1917.

Wounded in action, 17 October 1917, and admitted to 54th General Hospital (gun shot wound, left thigh). Transferred to England, 23 October 1917, and admitted to Chatham Military Hospital, 25 October 1917. Transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 28 December 1917. Granted furlough, 29 December 1917 to 12 January 1918, to report to No. 2 Command Depot, Hurdcott. Found guilty of being Absent Without Leave, 12-15 January 1918: awarded 4 days' Field Punishment No. 2, and forfeiture of 8 days' pay.

Proceeded overseas to France, 14 February 1918. Rejoined unit in the field, 21 February 1918. Detached to 28th Coy, Australian Army Service Corps, 21 February 1918; rejoined unit, 25 February 1918.

Wounded in action, 8 August 1918 (gun shot wound, left shoulder); rejoined unit, 27 August 1918. On leave to England, 26 October 1918; rejoined unit, 14 November 1918. Found guilty of being absent from fatigue parade, 2 March 1919: awarded forfeiture of 2 days' pay.

Marched out from unit for return to Australia, 9 April 1919; commenced return to Australia from Devonport on board 'Beltana', 2 June 1919. Disembarked Sydney, 19 July 1919; discharged, 4 September 1919.
