Meritorious Service Medal

'For continued good service, devotion to duty, and conspicuous gallantry in action. In June, 1917, he took part in MESSINES fighting, and fought his gun under very heavy enemy shell fire and machine gun fire, and displayed great courage in moving his gun into a forward position and dislodging the enemy from a strongly held position. In July and August, 1917, near WARNETON he again led his gun team without personal fear and set a fine example to all around him, of personal bravery, under heavy enemy fire. On October 4th, 1917, near PASSCHENDAELE, although wounded in face and arm he continued to fight his gun, and was instrumental in repelling the enemy from the cemetery near PASSCHENDAELE.'
