War service: Western Front Embarked Melbourne, 20 October 1916; transshipped at Sierra Leone, West Africa, to HMAT 'Borda', 2 December 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 9 January 1917; marched in to 10th Training Bn, Larkhill, 10 January 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 28 May 1917; taken on strength, 37th Bn, 3 April 1917. Found guilty, 15 April 1917, of when in Camp being beyond the limits fixed by Camp Rrders without a pass in that he was absent from Rest Camp until apprehended in Guildhall Street at 10 am on 28 March 1917: admonished. Wounded in action, 7 June 1917 (gassed), and admitted to 9th Field Ambulance; transferred same day to 53rd Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to Ambulance Train No 14, 7 June 1917, and admitted to 35th General Hospital, Calais, 8 June 1917; transferred to England, 10 June 1917, and admitted same day to 1st London General Hospital; transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 26 July 1917; discharged on furlough, 31 July 1917, to report to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 14 August 1917. Marched out to No 4 Command Depot, Codford, 24 October 1917; marched out to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 24 November 1917.
