Military Cross

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of stretcher-bearers. He constantly patrolled the bearer line under very heavy shell fire, maintaining communication between aid posts and dressing stations, and on one occasion he took the squad across the open through an intense barrage to an aid post in order to relieve a temporary glut of wounded. He was twice wounded, the second time severely, and his gallant conduct was the means of saving many lives.'
