Taken on strength, 1st Bn, Tel el Kebir, 14 February 1916.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 22 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 28 March 1916.

Admitted to 1st Australian Field Ambulance, 1 June 1916 (defective teeth); discharged same day to duty; rejoined Bn, 3 June 1916.

On Command, Trench Mortar School of Instruction, in the field, 28 October 1916; rejoined Bn from On Command, 12 November 1916.

Admitted to 1st Australian Field Ambulance, 4 March 1917 (pyrexia, unknown origin), and trasnferred to Divisional Rest Station; discharged to unit, 18 March 1917.

Absent without leave, 5 May 1917; rejoined Bn from AWL, 10 May 1917.

Tried by Field General Court Martial, 23 May 1917, on charge of when on Active Service, deserting His Majesty's Service (Absent from 5 May 1917 until apprehended by Military Police on 6 May 1917: 'On reassembling on 8th June, 17, and on reading the opinion of the Confirming Authority, the Court finds NOT GUILTY OF DESERTION but GUILTY OF ABSENT WITHOUT LEAVE: awarded 9 months' imprisonment with hard labour, 8 June 1917.

Admitted to No 5 Military Prison, Les Attaques, 18 July 1917.

Unexpired portion of sentence remitted as from 19 February 1918; rejoined Bn, 19 February 1918.

Tried by Field General Court Martial, 30 July 1918, on charge of desertion; found 'Guilty': awarded 10 years' penal servitude; sentence commuted by Commander-in-Chief to 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour, 12 November 1918; unexpired portion of sentence suspended, 18 June 1919, on release from Military Prison.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Anchises', 22 August 1919; discharged, 12 November 1919.
