'For devotion to duty and courage east of YPRES. On 18th October, 1917, under constant artillery fire from the enemy, these N.C.O.s [BROWNE and 2666 A.E. SHEPHEARD] did excellent work in reconstructing the forward communication of the 14th Infantry Brigade. Throughout the following three days in which the Brigade was in line, they at all times during the day and night, often under heavy fire, patrolled the lines and succeeded in keeping the Battalions in constant communication with the Brigade Headquarters.'
