Admitted to 88th Field Ambulance, 26 October 1916 (balava posthitis); transferred to Casualty Clearing Station, 26 October 1916; returned to unit, 31 October 1916. On command, school of Musketry, 2 January 1917; rejoined unit, 13 July 1917. On leave to England, 29 August 1917; rejoined unit, 11 September 1917.

Wounded in action, 27 September 1917 (shell wound, eye, throat and face), and admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station, 27 September 1917; by Ambulance Train to 8th Stationary Hospital, Wimereux, 27 September 1917; to 1st Convalescent Depot, Boulogne, 1 October 1917; to 25th General Hospital, 11 October 1917; to 1st Convalescent Depot, 22 October 1917. Found guilty, 4 October 1917, of (1) being absent from camp, 9 pm to 9.40 pm, 3 October 1917; (2) breaking out of camp: awarded forfeiture of 3 days pay. Discharged from 1st Convalescent Depot to 3rd Rest Camp, 9 November 1917; rejoined unit, 24 December 1917.

Admitted to 14th Australian Field Ambulance, 3 January 1918 (scabies), and transferred to 20th General Hospital; discharged to Base, 6 January 1918; rejoined unit, 20 February 1918.

Wounded in action, 10 March 1918 (gassed); admitted to 5th Australian Division Rest Station, 11 March 1918; discharged to duty, 17 March 1918; rejoined unit, 18 March 1918.

Wounded accidentally, 8 April 1918 (gun shot wound, left hand); admitted to 3rd Stationary Hospital, Rouen; transferred to England, 9 April 1918, and admitted to Bath War Hospital, 10 April 1918. Transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 19 April 1918. granted furlough, 30 April-14 May 1918, to report to No. 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott. Marched in to No. 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 28 August 1918. Found guilty, 30 October 1918, of being absent without leave, 0001, 30 October, to 1430, 31 October 1918: awarded forfeiture of 2 days pay.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Somali', 10 December 1918; disembarked Sydney, 10 February 1919; discharged, 24 April 1919.
