Military Medal 'During the attack on POLYGON WOOD, east of HOOGE, on 20/21st September 1917, Pte. BUTLER displayed great gallantry and devotion to duty. Whilst his company was in the assembly position, they were heavily shelled and when the remainder of his L.M.G. section became casulaties, he carried, not only the gun, but a full complement of ammunition over heavy country and established it in the front line, although badly shaken himself.'
