Proceeded overseas to France from England, 16 September 1916; joined unit, in the field, 2 October 1916.

Transferred to 2nd Australian Division Field Artillery, 24 December 1916.

Taken on strength, 5th Field Artillery Brigade, and posted to 15th Battery as Gunner, 26 December 1916.

Admitted to 15th Australian Field Ambulance, 30 June 1917 (influenza), and transferred same day to 2nd Divisional Rest Station; to 7th Australian Field Ambulance, 30 June 1917; to 56th Casualty Clearing Station, 4 July 1917 (trench fever); discharged to duty, 24 July 1917; rejoined unit, in the field, 12 August 1917.

On leave to United Kingdom, 20 September 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 3 October 1917.

Admitted to 5th Australian Field Ambulance, 28 March 1918 (septic toe, left foot); transferred to 30th General Hospital, Calais, 29 March 1918; to England, 31 March 1918, and admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham (Stourbridge Section), 1 April 1918; transferred to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 24 April 1918; discharged on furlough, 22 June 1918, to report to No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 6 July 1918.
