War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Melbourne, 28 January 1916; disembarked Suez, 28 February 1916. Transferred to 57th Bn, 29 March 1916; taken on strength, 57th Bn, Ferry Post, 1 April 1916. Transferred to 60th Bn, 3 April 1916, and taken on strength. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Killed in action, 19 July 1916. Statement, Red Cross File No 730308: '4089 Pte G.H. CAMPBELL, A Company, 60th Bn (patient, 2nd Birmingham War Hospital, Hollymoor, England), 24 December 1916: 'Informant states that on July 20th at Rifle Villa Cemetery, Fromelles[,] he saw the grave of Christensen. It is marked with a cross and the man's name is given thereon.' Second statement, SA, 2 March 1917: 'Date of death 18.7.16. Buried in Grave No. 6. Row B. Fleurbaix Military Cemetery, by Pioneer Sgt. G.F. McBain. Chaplain: Capt. J.F. Gilbert. Ascertined from Burial Records supplied by Sgt. McBain and personally inspected by me.' Third statement, 222A Pte J.F. O'CALLAGHAN, 60th Bn, 10 October 1917: 'Casualty was my particular friend. He was with the Lewis Gunners. I saw Casualty shot in the trench in the small of the back. He was lying dead.
