Found guilty, 28 September 1916, of being absent without leave from 1530 hours, 26 September 1916, until 1330 hours, 27 September 1916: awarded 10 days' confined to barracks, and forfeits 2 days' pay. Found guilty, 19 October 1916, of being absent from 0630 hours, and 1000 hours parades, 18 October 1916: awarded 7 days' confined to barracks, and forfeits 1 days pay. Disembarked Plymouth, England, 14 November 1916. Tried by District Court Martial, 11 December 1916, on charges of (1) disobeying a lawful command given by his Superior Officer; (2) when in lawful custody, attempting to escape; (3) committed a civil offence, in that attempting robbery with violence: pleaded Guilty on charges 1 and 2; found Guilty on charge 3: sentenced to 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour: sentence confirmed by Brigadier General Newton J. Moore, 16 December 1916, but 6 months of sentence remitted. Unexpired portion of sentence (234 days) remitted, 19 October 1917. Marched into 15th Training Bn, Codford, 5 November 1917. Tried by Field General Court Martial, 21 October 1918, of charges of (1) while on active service, breaking out of camp at Le Havre on 9 October 1918; (2) while on active service, drunkenness; (3) while on active service, resisting arrest of an escort; (4) while on active service, committing an offence against the property of an inhabitant of the country at Le Havre on 9 October 1918, in that he damaged the property of Mdlle Guestron, Cafe de Bordeaux, to the value of 60 francs; (5) while on active service, committing an offence against the person of an inhabitant of the country at Le Havre on 9 October 1918, in that he assaulted Mdlle Guestron, a French Civilian: pleaded Guilty to charge 1; found Guilty on charges 3, 4 and 5; found Not Guilty on charge 2: sentenced to 1 year's imprisonment with hard labour, and to make good the sum of 60 francs; sentence confirmed by Colonel F.J. Parker, 22 October 1918. Admitted to No 3 Military Prison, Le Havre, 5 November 1918. Transferred to England, 24 February 1919; admitted to Lewes Detention Barracks, 25 February 1919.
