Military Medal 'On September 20th, 1917, during operations near WESTHOEK, this N.C.O. moved forward with his Stokes Mortar. The Sergeant in charge of the two guns forward, who was acting as an Officer was hit, this N.C.O. took charge of both guns and carried out throughout the operations, getting both guns and his supplies of ammunition into position under heavy shell fire. He went out alone and personally shot an enemy sniper who had been responsible for many casualties amongst our men. His conduct throughout was excellent, setting a fine example by his coolness and cheerfulness under heavy shell and machine gun fire.'
