War service: embarked from Melbourne, 2 October 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 19 November 1916. Found guilty while on board ship of disobeying an order, 16 October 1916: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No. 2.

Proceeded overseas to France, 15 March 1917; joined Bn in the field, 21 March 1917. Appointed Lance Corporal, 6 June 1917. To Brigade Musketry School, 24 August 1917; rejoined unit, 4 September 1917. Attached to 1st Infanry Brigade as a gas guard, 5 November 1917; rejoined unit, 11 November 1917. Detached to Brigade Intelligence Course, 24 December 1917; rejoined unit, 31 December 1917. To Brigade Musketry School, 6 January 1918; rejoined unit, 18 January 1918. Proceeded on leave to England, 21 January 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 8 February 1918.

Wounded in acion, 17 April 1918. Transferred to England, 28 April 1918, and admitted to Colchester General Military Hospital, 29 April 1918 (gun shot wound, thorax). Transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, 22 May 1918; discharged to No. 2 Command Depot, 24 May 1918. Proceeded overseas to France, 12 October 1918; rejoined unit, 17 October 1918.

Admitted to hospital, 3 November 1918 (scabies), and transferred to 2nd Stationary Hospital; discharged to Base, 15 November 1918; rejoined unit, 3 December 1918. To Paris on leave, 16 March 1919; rejoined unit from leave, 28 March 1919.

Marched out to England to commence return to Australia, 10 April 1919; commenced return to Australia on board 'Aneas', 31 May 1919; disembarked, 12 July 1919.
