Military Medal 'For great gallantry and devotion to duty when at WESTHOEK on the night of 16/17th October 1917 during a heavy gas and shell bombardment a gas shell struck the telephone pit burying two men. This man with absolute disregard to personal danger at once proceeded to dig them out, and succeeded in saving the lives of both men who were eventually evacuated.'
