Proceeded overseas to France, 28 February 1917; taken on strength, 3rd Pioneer Bn, 16 March 1917. Attached to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station for temporary duty, 26 November 1917; rejoined unit, 13 December 1917. On leave to united Kingdom, 20 March 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 8 April 1918. Found guilty, 3 April April 1918, of when returning from English leave absenting himself without leave for 1 day, 3 April 1918: forfeited 2 days' pay; total forfeiture: 3 days' pay.
