Embarked Melbourne, 23 November 1916; disembarked Plymouth, England, 29 January 1917. Proceeded overseas to France, 19 April 1917; taken on strength, 2nd Pioneer Bn, 12 May 1917.

Admitted to 15th Field Ambulance, 7 February 1918 (blockage of salivary duct); transferred to 22nd General Hospital, Camiers, 11 February 1918; to 6th Convalescent Depot, 15 March 1918 (varicose veins, leg); to 5th Convalescent Depot, 19 March 1918; discharged to Base Depot, 30 March 1918; rejoined unit, 26 April 1918.

On leave to England, 31 July 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 21 August 1918.

Wounded in action, 5 October 1918 (gun shot wound, right leg), and admitted to 5th Australian Field Ambulance; transferred to 2nd Australian General Hospital, Boulogne, 6 October 1918; to England, 12 October 1918, and admitted to Suffolk War Hospital; transferred to 3rd Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 2 December 1918 (gun shot wound, right thigh); discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 9 December 1918.

Found guilty, District Court Martial, Weymouth, 6 February 1919, of being absent without leave, 14 December 1918 to 6 January 1919: awarded forfeiture of 32 days' pay; 20 days' forfeiture remitted, 7 February 1919.

Commenced return to Australia on board 'Armagh', 5 April 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 18 May 1919; discharged (medically unfit), 13 July 1919.
