Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in taking charge of his platoon when his seniors had become casualties. He kept it under control in trying moments, handling his men with great ability and determination. He was greatly instrumental for the excellent morale which prevailed throughout.'
Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No. 219 Date: Military Medal 'At VILLERS BRETONNEUX on 16th May, 1918.After one N.C.O. had been mortally wounded in going out to No Man's Land to rescue the wounded pilot of a crashed British plane Sergeant DICKSON promptly volunteered to assist bringing both in. He went out under a fierce and continuous machine gun fire and regardless of danger succeeded in conjunction with Sergeant FITZGERALD in bringing the pilot in. He made another trip to bring in the other N.C.O. His fearlessness and prompt action were very inspiring to all ranks.'
