Embarked on HMAT 'Rangatira', 25 September 1914. Found guilty of Neglect of Duty: awarded 7 days' Confined to Barracks, Cleopatra, 8 October 1915. Transferred to Dermatological Hospital, Cairo, Egypt, 2 December 1915; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 35 days. Rejoined unit, 6 January 1916. Admitted to Dental Auxilary Hospital, Cairo, 25 January 1916; rejoined 1st Divisional Ammunition Column, 21 February 1916, at Zeitoun.

Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 26 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 2 April 1916. Transferred to No. 4 Section, Divisional Ammunition Column, France, 18 April 1916. Transferred from Divisional Ammunition Column to 21st Field Artillery Brigade, in the field, 3 November 1916. To hospital 'sick', Casualty Clearing Station, 23 November 1916. Rejoined unit, 30 November 1916. Admitted to 5th Field Ambulance, 6 December 1916; transferred to 20th General Hospital, Camiers (illness not described), 10 December 1916. Discharged to 1st Australian Division Base Depot, Etaples, 17 December 1916; rejoined unit (21st Brigade), 14 January 1917.

Taken on strength, as a driver, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, from 21st Field Artillery Brigade, 24 January 1917. Proceeded on leave, 10 May 1917; rejoined unit from leave, 28 May 1917. On leave to Paris, 5 February 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 14 February 1918. On leave to England, 25 February 1918; rejoined unit, 14 March 1918.

Found guilty of Absence Without Leave from 0930 hours, 16 July, to 0900 hours, 17 July 1918: awarded 5 days' Field Punishment No. 2 and forfeited 6 days' pay.
