Embarked Australia, 29 September 1915.

Embarked Alexandria and proceeded to join the British Expeditionary Force, 30 May 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 5 June 1916.

Found guilty at Etaples, 10 June 1916, of breaking entrainment whilst on active service, 6 June 1916: awarded 21 days' Field Punishment No 1. Taken on strength of 24th Bn, 31 July 1916.

Admitted to 4th Field Ambulance, 5 August 1916, and transferred to 3rd Casualty Clearing Station (gun shot wound, right shoulder); to Ambulance Train, 7 August 1916, and admitted to 13th General Hospital, Boulogne, 8 August 1916. Embarked Boulogne on HS 'St. Denis' and proceeded to England, 15 August 1916; admitted to Suffolk Hospital, Edmonds, 15 August 1916; transferred to General Military Hospital, Colchester, 17 August 1916; transferred to Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, London, 13 November 1916.

Excerpt from medical history reads, 'Received gun shot wound of right shoulder on August 4th 1916. On November 23rd wound was opened up and shrapnel removed. The Ulna and Median nerves were badly lacerated, but divided ends were sutured together, with elbow in fully flexed position. Musculo-spinal nerve responded well to stimulation. Median and ulna paralysis with no possibility of improvement'.

Transferred to Queen Alexandria Barracks Hospital, Millbank, 23 February 1917; to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 21 March 1917; discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 7 April 1917.

Embarked on 'Euripides' for change at Cape Town, 21 July 1917; disembarked Melbourne from HMAT 'Benalla', 24 October 1917

Admitted to 5th Australian General Hospital, 7 November 1917 (further treatment to arm); transferred to 16th Australian Auxiliary Hospital, 8 December 1917; to 5th Australian General Hospital, 10 April 1917. Discharged as being medically unfit for service, 29 April 1918.
