Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of sections of stretcher bearers. He was constantly in the forward area with his men, where his initiative and judgment undoubtedly saved the lives of many wounded, to whom delay would have proved fatal. He several times led his bearers through enemy barrage and into "No Man's Land" under heavy fire to pick up wounded. By his personal gallantry and devotion he has greatly assisted in evacuation of the wounded, and set a splendid example to his men.'
